New Standard for Testing Unlicensed Wireless Devices

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Committee C63^®, (Electromagnetic Compatibility) recently approved by ballot a new standard, ANSI C63.10; entitled “Standard for Testing Unlicensed Wireless Devices.” After publication editing, the new standard will be sent to ANSI’s Board of Standards Review for implementing its public review process.  Once this process is complete and there are no objections received from the public, the first edition of C63.10 is expected to be available for publication and use by this summer.

The new standard has in one document procedures for testing many unlicensed wireless devices for compliance with the Rules and Regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.  Currently it is necessary to refer to several different sources to find the measurement procedures for wireless devices.  A list of some of these sources may be found on the FCC Website at http://www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/eameasurements.html.  To facilitate the process, Edition 1 of the new standard contains those procedures thought to be relatively well understood by most test laboratories … this was not always the case, which demonstrated the need for this standard.  Work on edition 2 of C63.10 has already commenced to document the measurement procedures for new technology wireless devices and to resolve outstanding technical issues.

The compliance test procedures in clause 13 of ANSI C63.4 for unlicensed wireless devices are no longer sufficient for determining compliance many of the new wireless devices currently on the market.  At the appropriate time, clause 13 will be removed from C63.4 and replaced by the new standard.  It is also hoped that the FCC will incorporate the new standard into its Rules and Regulations by Reference, as is currently done for other ASC C63^® standards.
